Balcones Black-capped

Balcones Black-capped - Black-capped Vireo

14 inches wide x 11 inches high

Balcones Black-capped is my show piece for the upcoming Endangered Species - Flora and Fauna in Peril exhibition that starts in June at the Wilding Art Museum in Los Olivos, Calif. During a recent trip to Texas, we learned about two vanishing species in the Texas Hill Country - the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler. Both are found in this small area and nowhere else in the United States. Thanks to the efforts of several conservation groups in Texas, there is protected land for these birds to nest and make a living and to be as secretive around humans as they want. We found a few vireos along the north side of the Balcones Canyonlands NWR, but we only heard the warbler. At least we know they are there.
